St. Hedwig's Church

The St. Hedwigs Church is a Roman Catholic church building in Markt Berolzheim in the central Franconian district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen . St. Hedwig forms a curate of the parish of the Assumption of Mary in Treuchtlingen and is the common church for the Catholics in Markt Berolzheim and Wettelsheim . In 2012, the parish consisted of 570 Catholics. The church is on Wettelsheimer Strasse in Markt Berolzheim. The parish office is located in Treuchtlingen on Elkan-Naumburg-Straße.

history

Due to the influx of refugees from the German eastern areas, mainly from the Czech Republic , a larger Catholic population emerged in Markt Berolzheim for the first time in the post-war period. Following suggestions from curate Gregor Schneid, it was decided to build a new church. The patron saint was St. Hedwig von Andechs , the patron saint of Silesia . The church was consecrated on December 16, 1962, the second Sunday in Advent . Josef Elfinger from Ingolstadt acted as the architect . The church was damaged in 1984 by an explosion in a neighboring barn.

architecture

The building was built in the form of an equilateral pentagon , which is spanned by a 25 m high tent roof . The bell tower as the entrance to the church rests on four columns , is free-standing and lower than the adjacent church. The glass mosaics by Max Wendl with the life path of St. Hedwig make the building appear "as if flooded with warm light". In 2008 a stone ambo was purchased. St. Hedwig is one of the first churches, instead of at the high altar , a people's altar was used.

Bells

The bells date from the 17th and 18th centuries. They were supposed to be melted down during the Second World War , but could not be assigned to any church after the war. The bells reached Berolzheim via detours.
