Lysippe (Amazon)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lysippe ( ancient Greek Λυσίππη ) is an Amazon of Greek mythology from Scythia .

The myth has only come down to us in Pseudo-Plutarch's work “Over the Rivers” ( De fluviis ). She is the wife of Berossus and of him the mother of Tanais . Her son is a misogynist man who rejects marriage and gives himself up to fighting. The goddess Aphrodite feels offended by his behavior and punishes him with the fact that he falls in love with his mother Lysippe. Since he cannot suppress his love, he throws himself into the "Amazon River " (today's Don ) and drowns. The river was then named "Tanais".
