Hans Lamer

Hans Lamer (full name Max Friedrich Johannes Lamer , born April 27, 1873 in Leipzig ; † October 20, 1939 ibid) was a German classical philologist and grammar school teacher who taught at the König-Albert-Gymnasium in Leipzig from 1900 to 1931 .

Life

Hans Lamer, the son of the businessman Carl Friedrich Lamer († 1876) and Johanne Christiane born. Dietze, attended the Nikolaischule in Leipzig from 1883 to 1892 , where he was particularly influenced by his teacher Richard Meister . At his suggestion, Lamer studied classical philology and archeology at the University of Leipzig from the summer semester of 1892 . In October 1896, he was one of Otto Ribbeck supervised dissertation on the Greek chorjambische seal Dr. phil. PhD . After the state examination for the higher teaching post on November 8, 1897, he completed the probationary year at the Thomas School in Leipzig from January 1 to December 31, 1898 and went to the Realgymnasium in Leipzig as a vicar (assistant teacher) at Easter 1899. From November 1897 to Easter 1900 he was an assistant at the Archaeological Institute of Leipzig University.

At Easter 1900 Lamer moved to the König-Albert-Gymnasium , where he was promoted to senior teacher at Easter 1902 and spent his entire subsequent career. During the school holidays (until 1916 and then again from 1924) he regularly undertook educational and research trips that took him to the Roman sites in the German Empire as well as to Italy, Sicily, Greece, Turkey (to Istanbul ), Cyprus, Syria (after Palmyra ) and Libya (after Leptis Magna ). In 1923 he was appointed director of the König-Albert-Gymnasium. In 1931 he took early retirement for health reasons. He was a long-time member of the German Gymnasium Association (1919-1936 treasurer), to whose magazine Gymnasium he contributed numerous essays, travel and literature reports. He was also a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and a member of the Comitato permanente per l'Etruria. He died on October 20, 1939 after a long illness.

Scientific and literary work

Lamer dealt with the most varied areas of ancient studies, especially with cultural history and mythology . He published, often together with specialist colleagues, various non-fiction books on antiquity, among which the dictionary of antiquity, taking into account its continued operation (together with Ernst Bux and Wilhelm Schöne), stands out: first published in 1933, it was revised several times and was in its tenth edition in 1995. In the field of Greek mythology, he published a revision of Heinrich Wilhelm Stoll's standard work The Gods of Classical Antiquity (8th edition, 1907) as well as several articles in Pauly's Real Encyclopedia of Classical Antiquity (RE) and Wilhelm Heinrich Roscher's Detailed Lexicon of Greek and Roman Mythology .
