The BHÉV 5–8 were steam tram locomotives of the Budapest suburban railway Budapesti Helyiérdekű Vasút (BHÉV). This type of construction was also procured by numerous other tram, rail and industrial companies.

BHÉV 5–8

The BHÉV had these four locomotives built in Budapest in 1888 . They had the engine coverings customary for steam tram locomotives, which were intended to protect other road users from injury in the event of an accident. The otherwise modest dimensions for steam locomotives contrasted with a boiler with an impressive 15 atm operating pressure.

As the Budapest trams soon switched to electric drives, they were soon sold. The ex-BHÉV 5 has been preserved and is in the possession of the Museumstramway Mariazell , but is currently on loan from the Historama Ferlach.

Kőbánya Drehersche Brewery

The Drehersche Brewery in Kőbánya , a branch of the Drehersche Brewery in Schwechat , procured a total of three copies of this type as factory locomotives from 1888 to 1893.

Local railway Keszthely – Balatonszentgyörgy

The local railway Keszthely - Balatonszentgyörgy had two pieces built in 1888, followed by a third in 1889. They were named TASSILO , GYÖRGY and MARIE .

In 1903 the railway was taken over by MÁV and in 1904 it became its property. The three locomotives were given the road numbers 5091 "-5093" as a second occupation, as the MÁV had already procured three such machines earlier, but had given them to the BHHÉV in 1897 (see below).

In 1911 they were given the series designation 284 in the new MÁV scheme. Since all three were sold in the same year, it is not certain whether they really carried all these numbers. The 284,001 came to Dynamit Nobel in Pozsony , the 284,002 to the DNHÉV (Debrecen – Nyirbátori hév) with the number 1, the 284,003 as 5093 to the BHHÉV (Brassó – Haromszek), which it sold in 1919 to the CFPBT , where it kept its number .

Budapest electric light rail

The Budapest electric light rail procured five of this series, presumably as a reserve in the event of power failures from 1889 to 1893.

MÁV 5091-5093

The MÁV ordered three copies with the old numbers of the first designation scheme 898-900. The delivery took place in 1891 (two pieces) and in 1892 already with the numbers 5091–5093 (category VII) for Brassó – Haromszek. On this route, MÁV ran operations from the opening in 1891 to 1897. With that year, the three machines were owned by BHHÉV . They were now called BRASSÓ , HOSSZÚFALU and BERTALAN and the company numbers 1–3.

In 1919 they were sold to the CFPBT, which the ex-BHHÉV no. 1, which gave the new company number 4. It was no longer possible to determine which numbers the other two received.

Budapest – Újpest – Rákospalota

The Budapest – Újpest – Rákospalota local railway also had a piece of this series built for its line in 1894.
