The MÁV series 342 was a passenger train - tank locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV for suburban traffic in the Budapest area on routes with rapid changes of direction without the possibility of turning.

history

This locomotive was created to modernize passenger traffic in the Budapest area and on other shorter connecting lines. As a derivative of the tried and tested TV series , two samples were initially created in 1915 in the MÁVAG locomotive workshops in Budapest ; the remaining series locomotives were manufactured by MÁVAG and Henschel in Kassel until 1918 .

The locomotive was able to transport 258 t, 5 ‰ 109 t, 10 ‰ 53 t and 16 ‰ 19 t at 85 km / h on the level route. After a short time, the locomotives were barely able to cope with the rapidly growing rush hour traffic in the Budapest area (especially when they had to start on gradients of 7 to 8 per thousand), so that they were replaced there by the more powerful successor type 442 . During its long service, it was distributed by many railway administrations in Europe, five locomotives with the designation 364.1 ended up on Slovak territory through assignments of territory.

A seniority of 40 years was not uncommon for this series. The first service-related retirement began in 1965, and the vehicles were retired from active service by 1972. Some vehicles have been preserved. So stands z. B. the 342.006 in the Budapest Railway Park .

technical features

After the first two sample vehicles were still made with copper fire rifles, the decision was made to go into series production due to the scarcity of materials for the Brotan boiler . The technical data given relate to the first two locomotives, the data of the series differed slightly.

The drive was designed with running axles according to the Adam design, the machine had a smooth run due to the large length, so that the speed could be extended up to 90 km / h.

A disadvantage of this type was that the flue gases escaped at high temperatures due to the short fire and smoke pipes and therefore not fully utilized.
