Thelocactus heterochromus is a species of plant in the genus Thelocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet heterochromus means 'different colored'.

description

Thelocactus heterochromus grows solitary and pressed spherically. The blue-gray-green plant body becomes 4 to 7 centimeters high and has a diameter of 6 to 15 centimeters. The 8  ribs are broad and rounded. The areoles are large and round without glands. The warts are rounded and very large. The 6 to 10 radial spines are straight, needle-shaped to sub-like, about 16 to 40 millimeters long and reddish to ocher-yellow in color. The 1 to 4  central spines are between 2 and 5 centimeters long. They taper to a point and are also reddish to ocher yellow in color.

The flowers are 3 to 6 inches long and 4 to 10 inches wide. They are bright pink to magenta with a red neck. The scaly fruits spring up dry. The seeds are 2 millimeters long and thick.

Distribution and systematics

Thelocactus heterochromus is native to the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Durango and Zacatecas at an altitude of 1200 to 1400 meters. The first description as Echinocactus heterochromus was made by Frédéric Albert Constantin Weber in 1896. MWB van Oosten put the species in 1940 to Thelocactus .

The following synonyms exist : Ferocactus heterochromus (FAC Weber) NPTaylor (1979) and Thelocactus bicolor subsp. heterochromus (FACWeber) Mosco & Zanovello (2000).
