The MÁV series 442 was a passenger train - tank locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways MÁV for heavy suburban traffic from Budapest .

history

Since the MÁV series 342 had reached its performance limit due to the increasing train weights in the suburban traffic of Budapest , MÁVAG , Budapest procured a larger and more powerful machine for these services. The reinforcement was achieved by enlarging the Brotankessel and a corresponding engine. In order to comply with the permitted axle load of 14 t, the engine was enlarged to 4 driving axles.

What is interesting about this locomotive is that it still had to run with a reduced water content of 9 m³ in order to maintain the axle pressure of 14 t. The machines carried 600 t at 60 km / h on a level route and 530 t on a gradient of 7 per thousand. At their top speed of 85 km / h, they could still carry 270 t on a flat stretch.

The machines carried suburban and passenger trains for decades until modern traction made them superfluous. The decommissioning date is given as 1972. One machine, the 442.013, has been preserved as a museum in the Budapest Railway Park .

technical features

The locomotives could be viewed as an enlarged version of the MÁV series 342 . Interestingly, the boiler pressure was reduced to 12 bar. The first 10 locomotives were supplied with small pipes, the rest with large smoke pipes.

There were also differences in the drive; the first 10 machines were designed with running axles as Krauss-Helmholtz steering frames, the remaining machines had Adam axles . The locomotives with Adam's axles had a guided length of 10,700 mm, this dimension was slightly smaller for the locomotives with Krauss-Helmholtz steering frames.
