The M62 series of the Hungarian State Railways (MÁV) is a series of diesel locomotives . It is the Hungarian variant of the Soviet type M62 .

MÁV series M62

After the M61 series procured by Nydqvist och Holm (NoHAB) in Sweden , subsequent deliveries of diesel locomotives became necessary from 1965 onwards within the Council for Mutual Economic Aid (RGW). Due to the beginning of specialization within the Comecon, the construction of diesel locomotives with more than 2000 hp was planned in the Soviet Union. Development and construction took over the locomotive factory Lugansk (LTS; Russian : Луганский тепловозостроительный завод, Lugansky teplowosostroitelny zavod, Lugansk diesel locomotive factory; later Ворошиловградский тепловозостроительный завод, Woroschilowgradski teplowosostroitelny zavod). After two prototypes were delivered to the Soviet railways (SŽD; СЖД), series delivery to MÁV began in 1965. The locomotives were given the series designation M62, which was then also adopted as the manufacturer's designation. Later, numerous other countries of the Comecon also received type M62 locomotives.

The M62 are designed as freight locomotives with a heavy six-axle design. Therefore the maximum speed is only 100 km / h, there is no train heating. Nevertheless, MÁV also uses the M62 in passenger train service, even before express trains, for which heating vehicles are required depending on the season .

Initially, the M62 had a red paint with yellow decorative elements, later they were painted orange with a yellow front. The construction of the standard gauge M62 for the MÁV ended in 1974 after the delivery of 273 machines. About 80 locomotives are still in service with the MÁV. Three M62s were converted into broad-gauge M62.5s (see below ).

MÁV series M62.5

For use in the border area to the Soviet Union (today Ukraine ) near Záhony , MÁV procured 15 locomotives of the M62.5 series in wide-gauge design for the gauge of 1524 mm (today officially 1520 mm) that is common in the Soviet Union. Three more M62.5s were converted from standard gauge M62s. In 2005 there were still seven M62.5 in action.

GySEV series M62.9

The Raaberbahn AG (formerly Gyor-Sopron-Ebenfurter railway AG, clothes. Győr-Sopron-Ebenfurti Vasút), an Austrian -ungarisches joint venture, received in 1972 six standard gauge locomotives that have been classified as a series M62.9. The M62.9 were based in Sopron and were retired in 1996.
