From 1906 to 1907, provided locomotive factory Floridsdorf to the MÁV seven of gear-tank locomotives for their gear rail line Karansebes - Őrváralja . Said route is now entirely within the territory of Romania . The machines based on the Abt system were four-fold coupled and each had a leading and a trailing Adam's axle, which compared to the MÁV TIVb created a more balanced weight ratio. They also had an inner frame and an outer drive for friction operation and an internal drive for gear operation. A Heusinger control was used in both cases.
They reached 40 km / h in friction mode and 12 km / h in gear mode. They could carry 120 t on the cogwheel route.
After 1918, the route on which the locomotives were used, including these, came to Romania. The CFR continued to use the seven machines with their Hungarian numbers. Six specimens were preserved as locomotive memorials or in museum collections after they were taken out of service.
The 40.006 was sold to Slovakia in 2002 and serviced in 2014. Since summer 2015 it has been in use with its original number 4296 in front of the museum trains on the Pohronská Polhora – Tisovec rack railway .
