Mário-Henrique Leiria

Mário-Henrique Leiria (born January 2, 1923 in Lisbon , † January 9, 1980 in Cascais ) was a Portuguese writer and painter of Portuguese surrealism .

Life

Leiria temporarily attended the Lisbon Art School ( Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa ), but was de-registered for political reasons in 1942. From 1949 to 1951 he took part in the Portuguese Surrealism Movement, during which time several of his works of art were created. Until 1957 he worked in a wide variety of professions, including commercial agent for the Portuguese merchant navy and bricklayer. This also included numerous trips to European countries. After the regime-critical action “ Operação Papagaio ” by various surrealists was prevented by the PIDE, Leiria went into exile in Brazil, where he lived from 1961 to 1970.

After he returned to Portugal, he published his first Salazar -critical work Contos do Gin-Tonic ( Stories of Gin-Tonic ) in 1973 . After the replacement of the Salazar regime in the course of the Portuguese Carnation Revolution in 1974, Leiria published his second work. In 1976 he joined the Partido Revolucionário do Proletariado (Party of the Workers' Revolution).

Mário-Henrique Leiria died of bone loss .
