Male act

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The male nude is a sub-genre of nude art, which deals with the representation of unclothed bodies and in this case exclusively addresses adult male models.

History of the male nude

Originally the study of a movement and the associated muscle reactions were typical for the nude, but the representation expanded to other areas as well.

Nude self-portrait by
Albrecht Dürer (around 1504)

Due to different moral concepts it was by no means uncommon to depict nudity in antiquity. This changed with the strict Christian guidelines in the Middle Ages, where nudity was only allowed in certain contexts, e.g. B. to represent ancient deities.

Photographic male nude, contemporary

It was not until the Renaissance that there were artists, e.g. B. Albrecht Dürer , who chose the nude as a possibility of self-portrait . In recent times the male nude has been picked up in so-called "muscle magazines" and has been an object of study in the art scene.

Male nudes exist as sculptures, in painting of various styles, as drawings and also as photographs of various types.

Contemporary artists and themes

Representations of the muscular male body are often part of the works z. B. by Bruce Weber. Even in male nudes, however, there are strong erotic or even pornographic references, such as B. in the works of Tom Bianchi. For Nan Goldin , the portrayal of the male, naked body has primarily documentary goals; her photography deals with sex, substance abuse and violence. Greg Gorman focuses on aesthetics; he also combines male nudes with female nudes. The artist Robert Mapplethorpe is also the subject of controversy , who sometimes created very bizarre recordings that had strong pornographic features and were often self-portraits. Nevertheless, his works are considered art, even if they contain extreme subjects.
