Men's house (refuge)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Men's shelters are facilities in which male victims of domestic violence are to find refuge. They are the analogue of women's shelters for female victims, albeit in significantly fewer numbers.

background

In Germany, initiatives have been promoting more men's and family houses for several years. In November 2012, the Maennerhaeuser.de initiative sent a petition to the Bundestag and all German state parliaments for more support for men's and family houses in Germany. This was repeated in April 2017, with the request to promote similar men's houses in all federal states as the ones that now exist in Saxony, as well as a publicly funded helpline for men affected by violence, as it already exists for women.

In a statement dated June 7, 2017, the Ministry for Social Affairs and Integration in Baden-Württemberg confirmed that there is a need for such facilities; The police crime statistics on intimate partner violence show that in the 2015 reporting year just under 20 percent of the victims of intimate partner violence were male. However, the number of unreported cases is significantly higher, according to estimates it is a third.

Men's houses in Germany

There is a men's house in Oldenburg and Berlin. In 2014, a men's house in Osterode am Harz was opened for a maximum of four residents; this was closed on May 1, 2017 with the funding expiring. The organization was sponsored by the Gleichstark eV association. The house was supported by the district of Osterode am Harz and managed by an employed project manager.

On February 1, 2017, a men's house for three residents each, possibly with their children, was opened in both Leipzig and Dresden . The projects "MännerHaus Leipzig" and "Männerschutzwohnung Dresden" are funded by the municipal social association of the Free State of Saxony. The anonymous “men's protection apartment” in Dresden is intended to offer temporary refuge for adult victims of violence in close social relationships. A psychosocial anamnesis , advice and follow-up care is guaranteed by an employed specialist.

The Weissenberg eV association maintains a men's shelter in Plauen in the Vogtland region.

A sheltered apartment for two men, possibly with a child, was opened in Stuttgart in October 2018.

In Munich there has been a sheltered apartment for 1 man, possibly with 1–2 children, since November 2018.

The Freiraum project has existed in NRW since April 2020, with 4 places each for men in Düsseldorf and Cologne.

There are also plans to build a men's house in Bayreuth, Upper Franconia.

Men's houses in Switzerland

In the canton of Aargau , the Association for Responsible Fathers and Mothers (VeV) opened the first Swiss men's house in November 2009. The target group of these facilities are men who experience physical or psychological violence in their marriage, who see their children at risk or who are burdened by a separation. The issue of violence against men was examined in a pilot study by the Federal Ministry for Family, Women, Seniors and Youth.
