Fairytale fountain (Weißenfels)
The Märchenbrunnen is a fountain that was built in 1911 and is now a listed fountain in the Neustadt district of the city of Weißenfels in Saxony-Anhalt . In the local register of monuments it is listed as a monument under registration number 094 15276 .
With the creation of the fountain, the Weißenfelser Beautification Association set itself the goal of creating a place of rest and relaxation in the more industrialized Neustadt. Originally a church was planned to be built on this site, but this was not carried out. The construction of the facility with the Cinderella figure at the fork in Tagewerbeer Strasse and Merseburger Strasse was made possible with donations from large-scale industrialists and the population.
The fountain, a work of Art Nouveau , was created by the Berlin artist Paul Mauschke. It consists of an octagonal fountain basin with depictions of birds and plants on four sides. In the center of the basin is a column with mask-like gargoyles on the shaft, on which the bird-feeding Cinderella figure is located. The paving around the well is also part of the structure. The fairy tale character also created a connection to the shoe industry, which at that time was at the height of its heyday in the city.
From 1984 to 1987 the fountain figure was removed and replaced by a flower bowl. At the initiative of the residents of the new town, however, the figure had to be put back on the fountain column.
In the course of the redesign of Merseburger Strasse from 2006, the square at the “Märchenbrunnen” was also reconstructed. A small green area with benches was created, with the fountain in the center.
