Mahdia (terminus)

The Métro du Sahel is a local railway in Tunisia along the Mediterranean coast .

The narrow-gauge railway operated by SNCFT connects Mahdia via Monastir with Sousse , the journey time is one and a half hours. The connection is also called "Ligne de la banlieue du Sahel".

The 73 km long route is fully electrified with overhead lines (25 kV, 50 Hz), the track width is 1000 mm. The lift opened in 1984 and extensively renovated in 2010. In 2009, 8.6 million passengers were transported, 60% of them schoolchildren and students. The trip on the entire route costs 2,500 dinars (just under one euro, as of March 2018) and takes exactly 100 minutes according to the schedule.

The train station in Monastir (terminus)

Other cities on the route are Moknine and Sahline . The terminus in Sousse is called "Sousse Bab el Jedid" and is located south of the main station in the port. An extension in the south via Ksour Essef and Chebba to Sfax has been under discussion for years.

The few long-distance trains between Tunis and Sfax, which stop in Sousse and Monastir instead of Kalaâ Sghira , use the routes in part. There is also a daily autorail (modern diesel multiple unit) from Mahdia to Tunis in the morning and back in the evening, which takes a good three hours. On the metro route it only stops in Monastir, but not in Sousse.

About the name

In French, Métro meansboth underground and light rail (the latter outside of France often also Métro léger , "light metro"). Sahel means desert edge or coast in Arabic ; the Tunisian Sahel describes the relatively densely populated area on the Mediterranean coast between Hammamet and Sfax .
