In the school Mësonjëtorja ( Albanian  also  Mësonjëtore ) in Korça ( Albania ) lessons were held in Albanian for the first time . The school building still stands today on the northern side of St. George's Boulevard (Alb. Bulevardi Shën Gjergji ) and, after extensive renovation, is now used as a museum .

history

At the end of the 19th century, in the areas of the Ottoman Empire inhabited by Albanians, there were increasing voices calling for Albanian autonomy from the Sublime Porte and for schools with Albanian lessons. Many intellectuals and politicians gave this national movement , the Rilindja , a boost. For the first time the most famous Albanian personalities came together at a table and discussed a uniform written language. Previously, Albanian was only taught by traveling teachers. Before this process was even completed, the first Albanian-language school was opened in Korça on March 7, 1887, on the initiative of individual educators and other intellectuals. Diamanti Tërpo, a citizen of the city, offered the premises of his house as classrooms for free. The first director and teacher of the school was Pandeli Sotiri .

The Mësonjëtorja was secular and was therefore open to all denominations, because the Albanian people are divided into Sunni Muslims , Bektashi , Orthodox and Catholics . In addition, students from all walks of life were able to take part in the lessons.

At the beginning the school had a class of 35 students. A preliminary class and four regular classes were added later. After three months the school had 60 and in the second school year already around 300 students. The subjects taught were writing, singing, Albanian grammar, history, geography, arithmetic, science and physical education.

On October 23, 1891, a girls' school (alb. Shkolla e Vashave ) was added, since until now only boys have been taught.

The Mësonjëtorja existed for 15 years; In 1902 it was closed by the Ottoman authorities. After mass protests, the school was able to reopen around 1910 and was used for another 50 years.
