Möckelmossen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Möckelmossen is a wetland in the south of the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Öland .

Located in the middle of Stora Alvaret , Möckelmossen is Öland's largest Alvar lake. The area of the Möckelmossen varies according to the season. While large areas are flooded in winter, large parts of the area dry out completely in summer. The limestone of the dry surfaces then glows white. In the middle of the moor there is a strip that always remains moist, but is not covered by open water. In addition to reeds , pond horsetail , stiff sedge and willow bushes grow here .

Ringed plovers and red-necked grebes breed here. Every now and then the black tern can be seen over the open water . Möckelmossen is also important as a resting place for migratory birds. Thousands of cranes rest here in September .

South of the moor on the road from Resmo to Stenåsa is a rest area with information about Stora Alvaret and Möckelmossen. The western part of Möckelmossen belongs to the nature reserves Mysinge nature reserve and Gynge nature reserve .
