The Mörkau Chapel , actually Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (Czech: Kaple navštívení Matky Boží ) is a now derelict chapel near Mírkov ( Mörkau ) in the Bohemian Central Uplands in the Czech Republic . The sacred building ("sandstone chapel"), which is partly carved out of the natural rock, was once an important place of pilgrimage.

history

A hermitage existed at the site of the later chapel as early as 1800 . Erasmus Rösler from Mosern created a cavity in the soft sandstone in which he placed a statue of the Virgin Mary. In place of the hermitage, a chapel in neo-Romanesque style was built in 1858/59, which was financed and built by the local population. It was consecrated in 1864.

Every year on the Sunday after the Visitation of the Virgin Mary (July 2nd) the Mörkau Festival took place, to which a pilgrimage took place. In order to obtain a small festival area, the rock to the right of the chapel was removed in 1864/65. In 1885 the chapel was renovated for 400 guilders in Austria.

After the native German-speaking population was expelled in 1945/46, the chapel fell into disrepair. It was removed in the 1970s. Today only the chancel carved out of the rock reminds of the building. The plant is located directly on the connecting road from Neštěmice to Mírkov .

In 2017, the via ferrata "Poustevna" was set up on the quarry walls around the former Mörkau chapel .
