New World is the geographical name for the area that arose with the beginning of the industrial settlement on the uppermost part of the St. Alban pond . The St. Alban-Teich canal was artificially created in the 12th century to power the mills in Basel's St. Alban Valley. In the years 1624/25 the canal was extended upstream through the Brüglinger Plain to the Birswasserfall. Here the water is diverted from the Birs .

The museum is located in the former water mill of the Brüglingerhof, right next to the Villa Merian , which today houses the Café Merian.

history

The mill is mentioned for the first time in 1259, belonged to the cathedral monastery of Basel and was operated by a tenant until the 16th century, who thus had the milling monopoly for the cathedral monastery farms. The mill was supplied with water from a tributary of the Birs, but its existence was repeatedly endangered by floods on the one hand or lack of water on the other.

The present mill building was built in the 16th century; Rebuilt in 1777, it was inhabited by the respective millers.

Christoph Merian took over the farm and the mill in 1824. The Christoph Merian Foundation converted it into a modern customer mill in 1892. During 1925 the operation was stopped. The mill continued to serve as a feed mill for the farm until the 1950s.

The exhibition, which has existed since 1966 and was redesigned in 2002, tells about the history of the mill and the crafts and daily work of the millers from the Bronze Age to the 20th century. The mill is functional, so the mechanism from the water-driven mill wheel to the rotating millstone is shown. The story of the former Basel stock mill , which had to cease production at the end of 2003, can also be found in an interactive documentation.
