length 9.8 km

The Mühlenstrang is a 9.76 km long, orographically right tributary of the Ruhr .

course

The Mühlenstrang rises in the south of the North Rhine-Westphalian town of Holzwickede and runs in a south-easterly direction. It flows past the Hengsen reservoir towards the southwest and receives a tributary from the Gehrenbach on the right . The Mühlenstrang flows into the Ruhr after 9.8 km at Schwerte .

history

The mill line emerged from one of the two arms of the Ruhr that flowed through the floodplain until 1719. This year the Ruhr burst its banks and shifted its course to the south. In order to be able to continue supplying the water mill, the remaining arm was narrowed. In the 1950s, the course was straightened and deepened, and additional walling was built later for flood protection. In 1998 the area was placed under nature protection. Today the mill line is only weakly maintained, so that many aquatic plants have now emerged and various animal species have made their home in the stream system.

Flora and fauna

In the mill strand itself today, among other things , brook berries , water stars , irises and hedgehog cobs grow ; Dragonflies , river limpets , mountain wagtails and moorhens continue to live directly on the stream. The bushes are home to green and small woodpeckers , and red-backed red- backed shrimp and reed horns breed in the hedges and pastures . Irregularly, a certain group of spruce trees even hosts a colony of gray herons .

Mühlenstrang nature reserve

The Mühlenstrang is part of the nature reserve of the same name (UN-034). The NSG is 55 hectares in size and, in addition to the Mühlenstrang and the Gehrenbach, mainly includes wet meadows in the eastern part and arable land in the western part. The vegetation offers a habitat mainly for amphibians, reptiles, dragonflies, endangered bird species and currently rare butterflies.
