The Münchner Straße is a 1.2-kilometer city road in Dresden South. It connects Fritz-Löffler-Platz and Nürnberger Platz in Südvorstadt with Nöthnitzer Straße in the Plauen district .

Location and course

The street runs from Fritz-Löffler-Platz almost in a straight line to the southwest. It crosses the districts of Plauen and Altstadt II . There are two separate directional lanes . The first section, about 200 meters long, between Fritz-Löfflerplatz and Nürnberger Platz has two lanes in each direction. In between run the tracks of the Dresden tram network , which , coming from the western side of Fritz-Löffler-Straße , run into the median of the square. On the second section of Münchner Strasse from Nürnberger Platz, this median is widened significantly. The tram tracks for each direction are directly on the side of the road, between them there is a path flanked by rows of trees, about 15 meters wide. Halfway through the second section, Münchner Platz extends on both sides of the street as a small park with a playground on the north side.

Münchner Strasse ends in Plauen on Nöthnitzer Strasse. While the northern carriageway remains straight, the southern carriageway bends slightly to the east and thus has a direct connection to Passauer Straße. The space created by the widening of the lanes is filled by a loop of the tram.

Münchner Strasse was laid out in 1899 according to the "Altstadt-Südwest" development plan and, like many other streets in this area called "Bavarian Quarter", was given the name of a major Bavarian city. Plans for the course of the road had been in place since 1886 at the latest. The Nürnberger and Münchner Platz in their current dimensions were also planned there. A first section from today's Fritz-Löffler-Platz already existed earlier. Contrary to initial expectations, Münchner Strasse was widened to 40 meters and implemented with separate lanes. It ended in 1899 just behind the Dresden city limits (the village of Plauen has only belonged to Dresden since 1903) on today's Würzburger Strasse, but was continued relatively quickly.

The southern end of the street differed from the current design around 1900. Bienertstrasse did not end at Münchner Strasse, but was extended over the site of the current tram loop to Nöthnitzer (then Räcknitzer) Strasse. The end of the tram was at the crossing Räcknitzer / Bernhardstraße and was served by lines of the Dresden Tram Company (yellow car). In 1909, the line was extended from there to the existing tracks at Plauen town hall ( F.-C.-Weiskopf-Platz , then Rathausplatz).

The development of the new street was largely driven by the Dresdner Baugesellschaft , they built residential and commercial buildings primarily in closed development. Around 1925 only the area between Münchner Platz, Münchner Straße and Nöthnitzer Straße was undeveloped. Starting in 1930, the Bauverein Gartenheim built a settlement designed by Paul Beck on this area.

After the destruction of the Second World War , which mainly affected the northeast section of the street, a rubble train ran from the city center via Münchner Straße to the Räcknitzer clay pit from 1953 . The tram to Plauen, built in 1909, was not rebuilt. Instead, Bienertstraße was shortened in 1953 and today's Wendeschleife was built in between.

In 1999 there was again construction work at the southern end of the street, this time in connection with the new construction of the tram connection from Coschütz , which since the end of the work has no longer been implemented via Altplauen, but via Südvorstadt and Münchner Straße.

Development

Especially in the southern area of ​​Münchner Strasse, the buildings from the early days have been preserved through the Second World War. Art Nouveau facade decoration is recognizable. One example of this are the listed tenement houses Münchner Strasse 26 and Münchner Strasse 32–36. After 1960, new houses were built in some places, especially on the southern carriageway. A total of six buildings along the street have been placed under monument protection. Another seven listed buildings are located on Münchner Platz.

The new regional court building with an attached prison was built on Münchner Platz from 1902 . After around five years of construction, it was handed over to its intended use in 1907. During the Nazi dictatorship and at the beginning of the GDR era, political prisoners were held and executed there. A memorial has been providing information about this time since 1959 . The building, damaged during the war, is now used by the TU Dresden .

An inconspicuous low-rise building at Münchner Straße 38, near the intersection with Würzburger Straße, offered workshop, depot and lounge rooms for operations during the rubble railway era in the 1950s. Most recently the building was a branch of the local consumer supermarket . It had to be demolished in 2013 for a replacement building.

The northeast end of Münchner Strasse has so far only been partially rebuilt after the war damage. Between Bayreuther Straße and Fritz-Löffler-Platz there were hardly any houses on the side of the street until the end of the 2010s. Many areas are fallow. In the development plan of the city of Dresden, these areas are intended to be used for residential purposes and for new university buildings. The development between Bayreuther Straße and Nürnberger Platz will be closed again at the end of 2019 after the construction of two residential and commercial buildings and a research building for the design automation department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits on the north side. The remaining areas in this area are to be developed together with Nürnberger Platz.

Münchner Strasse is used by around 6,000 vehicles per day, with heavy goods traffic accounting for around one percent (data as of 2012). The direction of travel Südvorstadt – Plauen is used a little more than the opposite direction. Long stretches of parallel parking are possible at the roadside.

The Dresdner Verkehrsbetriebe take tram line 3 to three stops on Münchner Straße: “Nürnberger Platz”, “Münchner Platz” and “Plauen, Nöthnitzer Straße” (Wendeschleife). Line 3 runs every ten minutes on weekdays. In connection with the “Stadtbahn 2020” project of the Dresden public transport company (including the construction of a tram across the entire Nürnberger Strasse), the “Nürnberger Platz” stop is to be relocated to the northeast.
