Maternal care

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maternal care , including home care for mothers and babies , weekly care or weekly support refers to professional care for mother and child, including the care of other family members, during the period immediately following the birth , the puerperium . The term maternity bed aid is also used for outpatient care for everything to do with childbirth.

Tasks of maternal care

In earlier times, when large families existed and home births were more frequent , women had much more immediate access to birth experiences - family members were accompanying and supportive in caring for mother and child after a birth. Today, family support is often not readily available. Fathers are usually heavily involved in work and family members often live further away, especially in the case of families with a migrant background . Professional and organized maternal and infant care or weekly support is a service that closes this supply gap.

A maternal nurse offers women who have recently given birth practical help after the birth of a baby, so that mother and baby can get to know each other, get used to each other at home and recover from the birth. In the case of special indications (e.g. efforts to give birth prematurely ), the benefits can also be used during pregnancy .

The term "weekly accompaniment" is also often used, which more comprehensively places the supportive and protective accompaniment of the woman in childbed in the foreground.

The main task of a maternal carer is to support the mother in caring for her baby, to advise on health issues and to help her organize the household:

  • she takes care of a complete diet for the woman who has recently given birth and her family,
  • She ensures that there is so much order (with tidying up and cleaning) and, if necessary, that the older children are occupied
  • she takes time for questions about the newly organized everyday life and supports problem solving,
  • she supports and advises in the areas of breastfeeding , baby care , pregnancy regression , stress management and relaxation ,
  • she knows how a healthy puerperium is going to take place, provides first aid in an emergency and informs the responsible midwife or doctor about the daily progress and special developments or difficulties.

Assumption of costs

In 2012, with the Nursing Reorientation Act, the benefits during pregnancy and maternity were transferred to SGB V as § 24c-24i. The mothers care or the use of a mothers nurse is therefore governed §24c 4. home care / 5th domestic help. As a rule, the majority of the costs are covered by the health insurance company. Here you can refer to § 24c , § 24g , § 24h and § 38 SGB V ( see also: Household help during pregnancy and childbirth ).

If there is a medical indication (e.g. caesarean section , breast inflammation , postpartum depression ), certified by a doctor or midwife, the period of use can be extended.

Differentiation from other occupational profiles

Activity of the doula

The activity of a doula is more focused on the time before, during and immediately after the birth and is more concerned with the emotional events surrounding the birth. Weekly or maternal care or weekly support tends to include practical support for the mother and the newborn. She takes care of the woman who has recently given birth, takes care of the newborn child and looks after the household and possibly siblings.

Activity of midwife

A midwife also comes into the house after the birth to check the well-being of the mother and child. As a rule, she only has a limited amount of time for the visit. B. Taking care of housework, nutrition and older children. In particular, the well-founded medical assessment of the puerperium and the development of the newborn are in the foreground when visiting midwives. These assessments, assessments and recommendations for action can be made faster and more accurately based on the individual circumstances of the woman who has recently given birth by including the observations of the maternal carer.

education

In Germany, the first training to become a “midwife-trained mother nurse” was offered in 1996 by a private institute in Rödgen (Giessen) and later also in Dresden . Further training is offered in Berlin by the Society for Birth Preparation and in Hamburg by the maternal care program.
