5 types of M & M's available in the USA

Under the brand name M & M’s , Mars Inc. produces colorful, sugar- coated chocolate lenses . The name stands for "Mars & Murrie's" after Forrest E. Mars , the inventor of the M & M's, and his business partner Bruce Murrie.

Variations

The following variations are mainly available on the German market:

  • Choco (brown packaging);
  • Peanut (chocolate-covered peanuts, yellow packaging);
  • Crispy (sweet crispy rice balls, blue packaging).

In the USA and Canada, M & M's with almonds, peanut butter balls, salted pretzels and dark or mint chocolate are also available. Special editions for special occasions, such as white chocolate with mint for Christmas or with a honey, coffee or chili flavor (on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of M & M's in the USA in 2016) are repeatedly offered in stores for a limited period of time. In France there are bean-shaped ones, the chocolate of which contains more cocoa than normal chocolate . The icing is usually red, orange, blue, green, yellow and dark brown (mixed colors) and printed with a small, white M on one or both sides. M & M's are available in special editions in over 20 different colors (black, dark green, purple, gold, wine red, turquoise, brown, light blue, orange, blue, light purple, pink, white, cream, water blue, red, dark blue, green, silver, dark Pink, yellow, ...) and can even be purchased in single colors or in special mixtures at the customer's request, but these are almost exclusively available in the USA.

history

M & M's, also called MDM or MnM's, were first sold in the United States in 1941 . M & M's have also been in Europe since 1975. In 1976 orange M & M's were added. In the same year the red ones were removed because a red dye ( amaranth - which was not used in the M & M's at the time) led to public discussion - in 1987, due to the high demand, red M & M's were added to the color mix again. These currently contain the dye E120 , which is obtained from female scale insects .

Treets

Treets

Treets are another trademark of Mars Incorporated . The treets were replaced by the peanut M & M's (yellow pack) and the bonitos by the chocolate M & M's (brown). The chocolate glaze Treets and bonito was thinner, melting and uncolored (Treets), the bonito were stained and with a printed Smiley provided.

Treets was taken off the market in 1987 in order to uniformly design the product names for chocolate lentils worldwide. As a marketing campaign for the 30th birthday of Mars Deutschland Treets came onto the market again for a short time. The Treets brand was then taken over by Katjes and came back to German retailers at the end of 2018 in a different, now orange, packaging.

Others

Presidential M & M's
  • Both Treets and M & M's were glazed with shellac , which was used to prevent the chocolate from melting. This property was highlighted with the advertising slogans "Treets melt in your mouth - and not in your hand" and "M & M's - melt in your mouth, not in your hand". Vegetable carnauba wax is now used.
  • A typical product line extension are M & M's chocolate bars .
  • Under the name "M & M's-World" there are several themed shops that exclusively offer M & M's merchandising.
  • The M & M's were already available on another chocolate bar: the “Cookies / Bisc &” bar, which is no longer available today.
  • Since the beginning of 2009, the M & M's chocolate lentils have also been offered as customized mass production . This gives the customer the opportunity to order individual M & M's with their own label.
  • Guests of the President of the United States receive M & M's in red, white, and blue on Air Force One , the White House, and elsewhere. These have been around since 1988 and replaced cigarettes as a gift from the President.

Color change at the M & M's

Every M & M's bag always consisted of at least five colors. When red was taken off the market in 1976, they were replaced by the orange M & M's. Since its reintroduction, it has grown into six different color directions. The last color change took place in 1995 when the tan M & M's were replaced by the blue.
