MEER eV is a non-profit association based in Berlin , which is committed to the protection of whales and dolphins ( cetaceans ) and their marine habitat .

history

In 1997 the project MEER La Gomera was launched. The MEER eV association was founded in Berlin in 1998; it is the sponsor of this project and maintains the associated research and information center on La Gomera. The name of the association is composed of the first letters of the words Mammals (mammals), Encounters (encounters), Education (education), Research (exploration). The purpose of the association according to the statutes is "the promotion of environmental protection, science and education, in particular the protection of the cetaceans (whales and dolphins) and their natural habitat as well as the research and creation of peaceful encounters between humans and cetaceans." In Germany, the association conducts public relations, he also presents his research results at international conferences.

The association is networked with national and international organizations as well as a member of globally oriented election campaigns. At times he was a member of the German delegation to the Science Committee at the International Whaling Commission . The association's patron is the children's song writer Fredrik Vahle .

The association cooperated with various universities and colleges. These include the Humboldt University of Berlin , Free University of Berlin , University of Vienna , Bangor University (UK), Universidad de La Laguna (ES), Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , Lübeck University of Applied Sciences and the University of Trier . There is a cooperation with the Eberswalde University of Applied Sciences in the course of study sustainable tourism (status 2010). The association runs international internship courses for students and supervises diploma theses from various German and international universities.

In 2008 the association presented a trilingual exhibition with the title Dolphins and Whales off La Gomera in the Canary Islands.

  • The film The SEA before La Gomera reached the semifinals at the Jack Ward Film Awards 2005 in the USA.
