M. Reza Ghadiri

M. Reza Ghadiri , also Mohammedreza Ghadiri, (born December 8, 1959 in Tehran ) is an Iranian-American chemist ( organic chemistry ).

Ghadiri studied at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a bachelor's degree in 1982 and a doctorate in chemistry in 1987. As a post-doctoral student , he was at Rockefeller University until 1989 . He became Assistant Professor at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla in 1989 and is a professor there.

In 1996 he demonstrated a self-reproducing peptide for the first time. It was an alpha-helix of 32 amino acids based on a domain of the yeast transcription factor GCN4.

His lab focuses on next generation DNA sequencing, lipoprotein modification, systems chemistry, programmable enzymes, peptide nanotubes and histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors.

In 1998 he received the Feynman Prize in Nanotechnology for fundamental work in the construction of molecular structures with the help of self-organization (laudation).

In 1991 he received the Beckman Young Investigator Award. He was a Sloan Research Fellow from 1993 to 1995, a Searle Scholar in 1991 and an Arthur C. Cope Scholar in 1999. In 1995 he received the American Chemical Society Award in Pure Chemistry . He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 2001 .
