Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan

MS Swaminathan ( Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan ; born August 7, 1925 in Kumbakonam ) is an Indian agricultural scientist . He is considered to be the father of the Green Revolution in India.

Swaminathan was Director General of the Indian Council for Agricultural Research from 1972 to 1979 and Minister of Agriculture from 1979 to 1980. He was Director General of the International Rice Research Institute (1982-88) and in 1988 President of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources .

In 1988 he was awarded the World Food Prize. With the US $ 200,000 prize money he financed the MSSRF, MS Swaminathan Research Foundation , an NGO that u. a. Developed and financed strategies for sustainable agricultural development and economic betterment of farmers and increased employment of poor women in rural areas of India.

Swaminathan was awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Prize of the Philippines and the Padma Vibhushan Order of India . In 1977 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences and in 1984 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He has been a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science since 1994 .
