World food price
The World Food Prize ( World Food Prize ) is an international award for those special achievements in improving the quantity, quality or availability have provided food.
The award was presented in 1986 by the Nobel Peace Prize -carrier Norman Ernest Borlaug created and is supported by businessman and since 1990 philanthropist John Ruan financed. The award takes into account contributions in all areas that serve to nourish the world : food science , agricultural science and agricultural technology, production , marketing , food research , economics , poverty reduction , political initiatives and social sciences . In addition to recognizing personal accomplishments, Borlaug also saw the award as a means of establishing role models that would inspire others.
The official award ceremony takes place in Des Moines , Iowa in the boardroom of the Iowa State Capitol . At the same time, the World Food Prize International Symposium is being held, which each year deals with a topic relating to world hunger and securing world food security.
criticism
Criticism comes from NGOs and recipients of the Alternative Nobel Prize, who criticize the intransparent interests behind this prize. So the price is supported by companies that are unpleasant to them, such as Monsanto .
After the announcement of the winners in June 2013, international experts like 81 winners of the Right Livelihood Award (“Alternative Nobel Prize”) and members of the World Future Council condemned the awarding of the World Food Prize to Monsanto executives and expressed their horror outraged by the award to scientists and executives of companies that manufacture and sell genetically modified seeds. The criticism in this case is directed specifically against Robert Fraley , Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Monsanto.
Award winners
The winners are honored annually in October. The winners will receive 250,000 US dollars . The award winners will be published at the end of spring / beginning of summer before the official recognition in October.
