The International Rice Research Institute ( IRRI ; German Internationales Reisforschungsinstitut ) is an independent, non-profit research institution with the aim of improving the situation of rice farmers and consumers through research and development. The institute was the first of the 15 Future Harvest Centers that together formed the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research founded in 1971 .

The institute was founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller Foundation in cooperation with the government of the Philippines . Among other things, it received the UNESCO Science Award in 1970 and the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in 2010 . The institute's head office is located about 60 km south of the Philippine capital Manila in Los Baños in the Laguna province .

The institute has also made key contributions in the field of breeding new rice varieties . The development of a particularly resilient, short-stemmed rice variety at the beginning of the 1960s is understood today as the beginning of the Green Revolution in rice cultivation and is often seen as one of the cornerstones of the Asian economic boom. It is also involved in the development of the golden rice .

The institute is one of the key institutions that has deposited seed samples in the Svalbard Global Seed Vault . More than 150,000 seed samples of different rice varieties are stored in the chilled seed vault, which is earthquake-proof and stored for future requirements and research.
