Hans Rudolf Herren (2009)

Hans Rudolf Herren (born November 30, 1947 in Mühleberg ) is a Swiss entomologist , agricultural and development expert. As a pioneer in biological pest control , in the 1980s he successfully combated the mealybugs , which threatened the important staple food cassava in Africa . This is said to have contributed decisively to preventing a famine . Men were the first Swiss to be awarded the World Food Prize in 1995 and the Right Livelihood Award in 2013 . Herren received the latter award together with Biovision - Foundation for Ecological Development , which he founded in 1998.

career

After studying agronomy and obtaining a doctorate in biological pest control at the ETH Zurich as well as a postdoc in the field of biological insect control at the University of California in Berkeley, Hans Rudolf Herren started working at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA, International Institute for Tropical Agriculture) in 1979 ) in Nigeria.

At that time, the mealybug, which was accidentally introduced from South America, threatened the manioc cultures. Cassava, originally also imported from South America, is an important staple food in Africa. It is mainly grown by small farmers and provides more than 50 percent of the food energy for 200 million people.

Instead of the largely ineffective and at the same time environmentally threatening use of pesticides against mealybugs, Herren implemented the largest biological control program to date. Through the use of parasitic wasps that were identified in 1984 in Paraguay as a natural enemy of the mealybug, the pest could be fought. In 1993, a natural equilibrium between parasitic wasps and mealybugs was established in Africa, causing the mealybird population to drop to harmless levels in 30 countries. Contrary to the fears, there was no major famine, which would have affected up to 20 million people.

After working at IITA, Herren headed the International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE) in Kenya from 1994 to 2005, where he developed biological solutions for other pest problems, in particular push-pull technology in maize. Since 2005 he has been President and CEO of the Millennium Institute in Washington, DC (USA), which advises governments in over 40 nations on the implementation of sustainability goals. In addition, men in 2008 was co-author and co-chair of the Testing of six UN agencies and the World Bank IAASTD World Agricultural Council (IAASTD).

With the prize money from the World Food Prize and other prizes, Hans Rudolf Herren founded the non-profit organization Biovision in 1998, which promotes sustainable agriculture and biological pest control in Africa. Through basic and information projects in East Africa as well as global advocacy activities, Biovision promotes ecological thinking and action in both the north and the south.

position

Based on his extensive experience in biological pest control, sustainable agriculture and rural development, Hans Herren is an outspoken advocate of agroecology and organic, sustainable agriculture. According to Herren, genetically modified organisms (GMO) currently, and very likely also in the future, do not bring any significant economic and social advantage for poor smallholders, as they also considerably weaken the resilience of agriculture by reducing the genetic diversity of crops. According to Herren, “today's GMOs no longer produce food. It is much more likely that they reduce production costs in the first few years before insects and weeds strike back again, according to the experience with pesticides. ”It is therefore better to work with an integrated agro-ecological, holistic approach in order to avoid pest plagues and if necessary to combat and thus protect farmers from costly license agreements with seed companies and the use of specific herbicides.

As described in the IAASTD World Agricultural Report, Herren advocates a paradigm shift from industrial agriculture with external energy dependencies to multifunctional agriculture that promotes a systematic approach to production and problem solving. In terms of research and implementation, the report recommends various measures on a sub-global and global level with a view to current and future food security.
