M-CSF ( Macrophage colony-stimulating factor), also known as CSF-1 , is an endogenous protein from the group of cytokines . In particular, it causes mononuclear phagocytes , such as macrophages and monocytes , to mature from blood stem cells . At the molecular level, this effect is attributed to activation of the CSF1 receptor . All cells of mononuclear phagocytic origin carry this receptor , such as B. mononuclear phagocytic precursors, monocytes, macrophages, osteoclasts and microglia .

structure

M-CSF is a protein and is extracellularly in its active form as a disulfide-linked homodimer . It is believed to be formed from membrane-bound precursors through proteolysis .

Interactions with other proteins

An interaction of M-CSF with PIK3R2 has been demonstrated.

M-CSF produced locally in the vessel walls contributes to the development and course of arteriosclerosis .

M-CSF has also been linked to male fertility.
