MEF cells

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MEF cells ( mouse embryo fibroblast ) are a mixture of cell types from embryos of mice , mostly from laboratory mice , which are used, among other things, to examine primary cells .

properties

MEF cells are primary cells obtained from mouse embryos. In contrast to cell lines , MEF cells as a model are more similar to the cells in an organism, because, among other things, MEF cells lack the immortalization of cell lines. MEF cells are freshly prepared and either cultivated in cell culture until shortly before confluence or examined without prior cell culture in order to reduce the effects of the cell culture medium on the cells in the latter case . Among other things, they are used to characterize stem cells and endothelial cells . MEF cells are also used as feeder cells . In the case of MEF feeding cells, transgenic variants with LIF and neomycin resistance are often used.

There are also immortalized MEF cell lines derived from primary embryonic cells , such as the ATCC -CRL-2991 line of the American Type Culture Collection, derived from transduction with the SV-40 virus with the large T antigen .
