The MIT Press is a university publisher based in Cambridge , Massachusetts , United States . He publishes for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but is an independent company.

The first book in the MIT Press archives was written by the German physicist Max Born , who gave two series of lectures at MIT on Problems of Atomic Dynamics in 1915 and 1926 . At that time, the book was still published by the institute itself. The publishing house was founded in 1932 with support from MIT as an imprint called Technology Press . In 1962 the publishing house became independent and at the same time took on its current name. The publisher has published over 8000 books to date and publishes around 200 books a year.

The Journals Division was founded in 1968 and soon afterwards published the first journals, the Journal of Interdisciplinary History and Linguistic Inquiry . Today, around 40 science journals are published by MIT Press.

Together with the Boston Review, the publisher publishes books called Boston Review Books .
