The MS & AD Insurance Group Holdings KK ( Japanese MS & ADインシュアランスグループホールディングス株式会社 MS & AD Inshuaransu Gurūpu Hōrudingusu Kabushiki-gaisha ) is the holding company of a Japanese insurance group with the acronym MS & AD Insurance . The group emerged from the former Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Group Holdings , which on April 1, 2008 merged with the insurance companies Aioi Insurance Co. Ltd. and Nissay Dowa General Insurance Co. Ltd. agreed. The company was renamed on April 1, 2010.

MS&AD Insurance is active in more than 40 countries and in 2015 was the largest insurance group in Japan and one of the largest in Asia with a national market share of 33%. The holding company employs 329 people (as of March 31, 2017), the entire group has over 40,000 employees. The paid-up share capital amounts to 100 billion  yen . With a turnover of 49.2 billion US dollars (as of March 31, 2017), MS&AD Insurance ranks 188th in the Fortune Global 500 list of the highest-turnover companies worldwide. The company is listed on the Tokyo and Nagoya stock exchanges (stock code : 8725) and listed in the Nikkei 225 index. The largest shareholder is Toyota Motor Corporation. The holding company is chaired by Hisahito Suzuki, and Yasuyoshi Karasawa is the President and CEO .

Tokyo Sumitomo Twin Building

The group's headquarters are located in the west tower of the Tokyo Sumitomo Twin Building, which is located in the Chūō district of Tokyo Prefecture .

In 2015, the British insurer Amlin was taken over for 5.3 billion US dollars . In August 2017, Fairfax Financial agreed to acquire First Capital Insurance, Singapore's largest property and casualty insurer, for $ 1.6 billion. In autumn 2017, MS&AD Insurance agreed to acquire a 5% stake in the British subsidiary ReAssure of Swiss reinsurance company Swiss Re and to increase it to up to 15% within three years.

Today MS&AD Insurance is divided into the following components:

  • Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co., Ltd. (ADI): created in 2010 through the merger of Aioi Insurance Co., Ltd. (a joint venture between Toyota and its subsidiary Toyota Financial Services ) and Nissay Dowa General Insurance Co., Ltd., specializing in non-life insurance, traditionally close ties with the Toyota Group and Nippon Life Group (Nissay)
  • Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Co., Ltd. (MSI): Active worldwide in the non-life insurance and financial services sector
  • Mitsui Direct General Insurance Co., Ltd. (Mitsui Direct): Internet and telephone direct insurer specializing in voluntary motor insurance
  • Mitsui Sumitomo Aioi Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (MSI Aioi Life): specializes in life insurance, created in 2011 through the merger of Mitsui Sumitomo Kirameki Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and Aioi Life Insurance Co., Ltd.
  • Mitsui Sumitomo Primary Life Insurance Co., Ltd. (MSI Primary Life): Former Mitsui Sumitomo MetLife Insurance Co., Ltd. renamed in 2011, specializing in life insurance, sales are via financial institutions ( over the counter )
