MT-T ( Russian МТ-Т Эней - German: Aeneas ) is the name of an all- terrain, unarmored, non-buoyant tracked artillery tug developed in the Soviet Union . MT-T stands for Russian многоцелевой тягач - тяжёлый (multi-purpose traction means - heavy). Internally, the vehicle was also referred to as product 429АМ (изделие 429АМ). The MT-T should replace the AT-T .

Development history

In the 1970s, the artillery tractor AT-T, which was based on the T-54 and was already in service with the Soviet Army, was to be replaced by a more modern vehicle. The aim was to construct a vehicle that has essential components in common with more modern Soviet tanks. As a result, the MT-T was built in 1977. The development work was carried out by OD Motritscha and MP Kalugina at the Kharkov design office for mechanical engineering "AA Morosow" . The production figures of the MT-T were low, not least due to the increasing spread of self-propelled howitzers and self-propelled guns to the detriment of the rifled artillery. In the 1980s and 1990s, other vehicle types were designed based on the MT-T.

construction

The chassis and propulsion system were taken from the T-64 battle tank , but the hull was rotated. The engine, clutch, gearbox, steering gear and drive wheels are now in the front part of the vehicle, the idler wheels of the drive in the rear. The cab for the crew can accommodate five people. The 12-cylinder diesel engine W-46-6, a reduced-power variant of the W-2 with 710 hp and 38.88 liters displacement, is located directly behind the driver's cab. The chassis consists of seven pairs of rollers, the suspension is provided by torsion bars. The metal platform behind the driver's cab with a maximum load capacity of 12,000 kg offers space for 16 more soldiers.

variants

The MT-T in the version with flatbed and tarpaulin was used as a tractor for heavy artillery pieces. In addition, the construction served as a base vehicle for various systems. These include:

  • the pioneering machine MDK-3 (product 453)
  • the pioneer machine BAT-2 (product 454)
  • the BG-1 bulldozer
  • the special crane KGS-25
  • the universal fire fighting vehicle UPG-92
