The Mavi Marmara ( Turkish for Blue Sea of Marmara ) is a passenger ship that became famous in May 2010 for its participation in the “ Ship-to-Gaza convoy ”.
history
The ship was built in 1994 by the Istanbul shipyard Türkiye Gemi Sanayii A.Ş. built and has a capacity of 1,080 passengers. Originally it was used as a ferry in the Marmara Sea. From April 12, 2007 it belonged to the Istanbul company İstanbul Deniz Otobüsleri A.Ş. , from February 2009 to April 2010 it was owned by the city of Istanbul. In April 2010 the passenger ship was sold to the Turkish organization İnsan Hak ve Hürriyetleri ve İnsani Yardım Vakfı (IHH) and brought under the Comorian flag on May 1, 2010 .
Ship-to-Gaza trip
The Mavi Marmara was acquired by IHH in 2010 specifically for the journey to Gaza.
In May 2010 an international convoy of six ships was organized, loaded with around 10,000 tons of relief supplies and almost 700 participants on board. The six ships were dispatched by various organizations, including the Free Gaza movement , the Turkish IHH and the Greek initiative Boat for Gaza . The aim of the trip was to break the Israeli sea blockade of the Gaza Strip and to transport aid to Gaza.
581 activists, around 400 of whom were Turkish citizens, traveled on the Mavi Marmara .
On May 31, 2010, on the route to Gaza, the Mavi Marmara was seized by the Israeli Navy in international waters after it had previously announced that it would prevent the convoy from breaking the blockade of the Gaza Strip. Nine activists were killed and over forty activists and seven Israeli soldiers were injured while boarding the Mavi Marmara . Eight Turks and one US citizen of Turkish descent were killed.
