The M 1 were the first medium-range ballistic missiles to be stationed on submarines of the French Navy . The independent French development was based on the US UGM-27 Polaris . The first tests were carried out in 1967. The conventionally powered test submarine Gymnote was used as a test vehicle . The two-stage solid rocket rockets were put into service by the Force de frappe in 1971 as the main armament of the first French nuclear submarine Le Redoutable (S 611) (MSBS) . The missiles were armed with a nuclear warhead with a strength of 500 kT . The missiles were only used by another submarine of the Redoutable class , the Le Terrible (S 612) , and were replaced by the M 2 from 1974 .
