history
The construction of the submarine was decided in March 1963. The first nuclear powered submarine in France was developed independently without foreign help. After a 5-year construction period, the new building was subjected to intensive testing from 1969 onwards. The Le Redoutable was put into service by the French nuclear forces on December 1, 1971 . The home base was the Île Longue off Brest .
The boat was initially armed with 16 M-1 missiles, but was soon equipped with the M 2 , which extended 700 km . Both types of missiles had the same nuclear warhead with a charge of 500 kT .
In the 1980s, Le Redoutable was modernized. It was equipped with M 20 missiles. These missiles had a new warhead with a charge of 1.2 MT. The sonar power equipment and the electronics have been improved and the boat capable Exocet - anti-ship missiles by the torpedo discharge pipes to use up. That was the last modernization of the submarine. The Le Redoutable was the only submarine in its class that was no longer armed with the M 4 missiles introduced in 1985 .
The Le Redoutable (S 611) was decommissioned on December 13, 1991 after 20 years of service and 51 patrols. It has been exhibited as a museum ship in the Cité de la Mer in Cherbourg since 2000 .
