The Triomphant class is the most advanced submarine - ship class of the French Navy . The first boat in the class entered service in 1997. The strategic nuclear submarines form the maritime part of the French nuclear force ( Force de frappe ). Their home port is the naval base Île Longue near Brest . They are equipped with 16 intercontinental ballistic missiles of the type M 45 , each of six nuclear warheads wear armed.
The Triomphant class replaced the boats of the Redoutable class and the Inflexible class .
overview
The Triomphant class was ordered in March 1986 to replace the Redoutable class . It is known in French as SNLE-NG ( Sous-Marin Nucléaire Lanceur d'Engins de Nouvelle Génération ), which means, for example, New Generation of missile-carrying nuclear submarines . Triomphant are much quieter than their predecessors and have more sensitive sonar equipment. Originally, six submarines armed with M-5 missiles were planned. After the end of the Cold War , the scope of the class was reduced by two units. The first three units were armed with M-45 missiles. Later, these three units were under the program IPER / adaptation au missile M51 with the weapon system M 51 equipped. The fourth unit, the Le Terrible , was equipped with M51 missiles from the start.
Le Triomphant completed a successful underwater launch of an M 45 in February 1995. A test of the nuclear warhead of these missiles took place in 1995/1996 during the last French nuclear weapon testson Mururoa despite massive international protests.
Since the decommissioning of L'Inflexible in 2006, the Triomphant-class boats have been the Force de frappe's only strategic nuclear submarines .
