The L'Inflexible (S615) was a strategic nuclear submarine of the French Navy . The submarine was a transitional construction from the Redoutable class to the Triomphant class and is the only submarine of the L'Inflexible class .

The L'Inflexible , armed with 16 ballistic nuclear missiles , was deployed by the French nuclear forces between 1985 and 2006 .

Details

The L'Inflexible (S615) was ordered in September 1978. Outwardly, it was almost indistinguishable from the older Redoutable class boats . In contrast to its five predecessors, the L'Inflexible was armed with the much heavier M 4 missiles. The missiles had a range 900 km longer than the previously used M 20 . The decisive innovation in missile armament was that the M 4 no longer carried just one warhead , but were equipped with a multiple warhead , each with six autonomous warheads of 150 kT each. Furthermore, the electronics and the drive were more modern.

After the introduction of the L'Inflexible , all older boats of the Redoutable class except for Le Redoutable (S 611) were modernized accordingly and also armed with M 4 missiles .

In April 2001, L'Inflexible successfully launched an M 45 rocket . The M 45 represent an intermediate step to the M 51 missiles under development . They have new warheads with stealth properties , higher penetration speed and improved resistance to EMP . The Triomphant-class submarines are currently equipped with M 45 missiles .

Until it was decommissioned in 2006, the L'Inflexible (S 615) was also armed with M 45 missiles .
