The MaK G 1201 BB locomotive is a diesel-hydraulic locomotive that was built by Maschinenbau Kiel (MaK) .
The wheel arrangement of the MaK G 1201 BB is B'B '. It reaches a maximum speed of up to 40 km / h. It received a 665 kW engine from MTU . The MaK 1201 has a service weight of 88 t. The tank capacity is 2,500 l.
The locomotive was part of a new type program that implemented the type recommendations of the Federal Association of German Railways , which were developed in the early 1970s. This included access to the driver's cab via the circulation, shunter's steps under the protection of the front shield at all four corners, narrow fronts that made it possible to see the buffers from the driver's cab. The high frame should improve the accessibility of the units.
Only one example of the MaK G 1201 BB was built in 1978. When the more powerful MTU 396 series engines were available from 1981, the type designation was changed to G 1203 BB . Outwardly, you can recognize these two types by their ventilation louvre on the front of the long hood.
The one built locomotive initially remained with MaK as a rental locomotive for two years. It was acquired by Solvay GmbH in 1980 and has been in service there as Locomotive 8 since then.
