The station Menden is a railway station in the town of Menden (Sauerland) and managed by the Hönnetal rail served. It is located southwest of the city center on the Hönne . The station was opened in 1872. After years of vacancy, the station building was demolished in 2012 and replaced by a similar-looking commercial building.
Station area
The layout of the station once included a kiosk, a restaurant, a ticket office, baggage handling and goods handling . Since the end of train traffic in the direction of Hemer / Iserlohn in 1989 and the abandonment of freight traffic in 2003, only the Hönnetalbahn trains between Unna and Neuenrade have stopped here. The ticket office at the train station closed in 2002.
After years of vacancy and decay, the building was acquired by an investor in 2009. A development plan was discussed for the further redesign and use of the station area .
In 2010 the intention was to demolish the station building and to use the resulting open space temporarily as a parking lot. However, the community of heirs who owned the station came to the conclusion that demolition would only be worthwhile if a new building was also built on the vacated site. This would be because there would be many technical problems with the demolition that would make the demolition inefficient without a new build.
In 2011 it became known that the investor List + Wilbers Projektentwicklung plans to build several retail stores on the abandoned train station site. On November 20, 2011, the Menden city council and the investor confirmed that the official groundbreaking for this station project will take place on December 16, 2011.
In 2012, all the old station buildings were demolished and replaced by new buildings. The foundation stone was laid for this on August 24, 2012. The old pedestrian underpass was removed. Access to the railroad tracks is now at ground level.
