Maarten J. Raven

Maarten Jan Raven (* 1953 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch Egyptologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Utrecht, Raven studied Egyptology and art history at Leiden University . In 1984 he received his doctorate with the thesis "Symbols of resurrection: three studies in ancient Egyptian iconography".

Raven has been head of the Egypt department at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (German: Reichsmuseum der Antiquities) in Leiden since 1978 . In addition to his work in the museum, he has been active at the ancient Egyptian necropolis of Saqqara since 1975 . There he works (head of excavation since 1999) in cooperation with the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, the Egypt Exploration Society (1975–1998) and the University of Leiden (1999). In September 2012 he was appointed professor 'Museology of Ancient Egypt' at the University of Leiden.

Raven published a lot about the museum collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden and about his field work in Saqqara.
