The former Echo Farm was acquired by the state in 1998 for US $ 2.1 million to preserve the valuable habitats. On the 121 ha (300 acre) the landscape alternates between meadows and woodland. There are several small lakes on the park area, the Salmon River borders the park to the southeast with the Salmon River Cove in the south. There the Moodus River flows into the Salmon River. To the north is the Sunrise Resort State Park , which was only established in 2008. The highest point in the park is Mount Tom at 96 m (314 ft) above sea level .

Surname

The name "Machimoodus" goes back to the Indian tribes that lived in the area. They heard strange noises and therefore named the area as "the place of bad noises". In 1981, geologists stated that "micro-earthquakes" occur constantly. A cave apparently amplifies the noises and makes them audible in the environment.

free time activities

There are opportunities for hiking, fishing, and picnicking in the park. The park is on the migration route of many migratory birds. Therefore, it is also a popular bird watching destination.
