Machiques is a city in the state of Zulia , Venezuela , in the northwest of the country and near the border with Colombia . It is the capital of the municipality of Machiques de Perijá. Livestock is the most important industry in the region. On August 16, 2005, Flight 708 of West Caribbean Airways , en route from Panama City to Fort-de-France , crashed due to a stall in the mountainous terrain of the urban area. All 160 people on board were killed.

Machiques is the seat of the Machiques diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. Nicolás Gregorio Nava Rojas has been bishop since October 2019 .
