The Madagascar bee ( Apis mellifera unicolor ) is an endemic subspecies of the honey bee that is native to Madagascar . It was first described by Pierre André Latreille in 1804.
description
Apis mellifera unicolor is a small, stocky and dark subspecies of the Western honey bee. Peoples of Apis mellifera unicolor are common in Madagascar, the bee is considered highly productive honey supplier. Beekeeping is therefore widespread in Madagascar. Since 2009, however, the increasing distribution of the Varroa mite has posed an increasing problem for the Madagascar bee population.
