Madeline Tompkins

Madeline Lynn "Mimi" Tompkins (born February 14, 1952 in Port Acres , Jefferson County , Texas ) is an American pilot . Mimi Tompkins was the first female pilot for the Hawaiian airline Aloha Airlines and began her career as a co-pilot on the Boeing 737-200 .

She became internationally known as the co-pilot of Aloha Airlines Flight 243 on April 28, 1988. At an altitude of 24,000 feet (7,315 meters ), the aircraft suffered a sudden loss of pressure caused by the demolition of a third of the cabin roof. Tompkins assisted flight captain Robert Schornstheimer on the following emergency descent and subsequent emergency landing on Maui .

Tompkins later became the first female flight captain of Aloha Airlines and continued to fly the Boeing 737-200 and Boeing 737-700 on the transpacific routes of this airline until it ceased operations on April 1, 2008. Since then she has been a co-pilot with Hawaiian Airlines .
