Madman Entertainment is an Australian distribution and rights management company, headquartered in Melbourne , specializing in feature films, documentaries, television series and anime in a variety of cinema and entertainment formats in Australia and New Zealand. It manages the distribution of live-action titles through the Madman Films, Directors Suite, Madman Sports, Madman Laughs, Madman Television, Bollywood Masala and Eastern Eye labels, as well as children's entertainment through the Planet Mad and Mad4Kids labels. Madman also has a movie distribution company called Madman Cinema. The company also sells programs that have been purchased or produced by the Australian Special Broadcasting Service . The company also distributes titles from WWE .

In 2018, Madman Entertainment separated from the Madman Anime Group , which has been owned by Aniplex since then .

history

Madman was founded in 1996 by Tim Anderson and Paul Wiegard exclusively as an anime distribution company, the offer was later expanded to other genres .

Until 2005, Madman was the distributor for Umbrella Entertainment , which specializes in the genres of horror , cult, art house , classic and exploitation films as well as the restoration and remastering of old Australian films. Since January 1, 2016 distribution partner for WWE titles in the field of video exploitation in Australia and New Zealand.

On 1 May 2006, the Madman Group of Funtastic Limited for 34.5 million was Australian dollar bought to acquire the media rights for titles for which Funtastic held the toy rights. Tim Anderson and Paul Wiegard signed an employment contract upon acquisition and continue to serve on Madman's board of directors.

On February 23, 2008, Madman announced that it had entered into a distribution agreement with Viz Media to distribute Viz Media's manga titles in Australia and New Zealand . The distribution contract ended in April 2016 when Simon & Schuster took over distribution of the Viz Media catalog and Madman Entertainment ceased distribution of all manga titles.

At the 2008 Supanova Pop Culture Expo , Madman announced plans for distribution methods . Madman launched the Madman Screening Room video-on-demand platform . Madman also began releasing Blu-ray Disc titles, starting with The Transformers - The Battle for Cybertron in June 2009. On June 1, 2009, Madman Entertainment produced an English adaptation of Eiga de Tōjō! Tamagotchi Doki Doki! Uchū no Maigotchi !? under the title Tamagotchi: The Movie . Madman also intended to continue Tamagotchi: Uchū Ichi Happy na Monogatari !? to synchronize, but the synchronization was canceled for unknown reasons.

In April 2008 the company announced a collaboration with the British company Warp Films . Warp and Madman planned to make at least two films together over the next three years, starting with the movie Tyrannosaur: A Love Story . On March 4, 2014, Funtastic Limited announced its intention to sell Madman Entertainment because Madman's market value was half of its book value.

In early 2016, Madman announced the Madman Anime Festival to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The convention took place in Melbourne from September 3rd to 4th, 2016 . Since then, the convention has taken place annually.

In late 2018, a Madman employee confirmed that Madman had entered into a distribution agreement with Funimation , with Madman becoming the local distributor for selected Funimation titles in Australia and New Zealand, and Funimation handling the licensing and localization of titles.

DocPlay

On December 1, 2016, Madman launched the video-on-demand platform DocPlay, a special documentation streaming service. The service has 130 titles to start with, which can currently be accessed via a web browser, Android, Chromecast and iOS.

The service was co-funded in part by Screen Australia as the platform can share revenue with local producers.

Madman Anime Group

In February 2018, it was announced that Aniplex had acquired a minority stake in Madman's anime business, Madman Anime Group, acquired in shares on November 15, 2017.

On February 6, 2019, it was announced that Madman Entertainment had completely sold the Madman Anime Group to Aniplex for 35 million Australian dollars.

The video-on-demand platform AnimeLab belongs to the Madman Anime Group .
