The Madonna della Rosa church is a church in Chianciano Terme dedicated to Saint Mary .
location
The church belongs to the diocese of Montepulciano-Chiusi-Pienza and is located approx. 200 m south of the old town of Chianciano in Via Madonna della Rosa , the street that continues south from the city gate Porta del Sole .
Description and history
The plans for the church were made in 1569 by Baldassare Lanci (1510–1571). Construction began in 1585, however, and was completed in 1599. The church has the shape of a Greek cross and was made of travertine and clay ( masonry bricks ) with a central dome . The dome was not built until 1764 by Leonardo Massimiliano de Vegni (* October 12, 1731 in Chianciano, † September 22, 1801 in Rome ). The name of the church is derived from the fresco Madonna che dona una rosa al Bambino tra San Giovanni Battista e San Bartolomeo , which is located above the high altar . In 1809 the church was restored by Luigi Sgrelli De Vegni.
