Gospa od Škrpjela ( Italian Madonna dello Scarpello , German Maria vom Felsen or from the reef ) is one of the two small islands off the coast of Perast in the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro (the other is Sveti Đorđe ). It is an artificial island that was created by a bulwark of rocks and old sunken ships loaded with stones.
The tradition of rock throwing is still alive today. Every year on July 22nd, the festival called fašinada takes place when the locals throw stones into the sea to increase the island's area.
In 1452 the first church on the island was built with Gospa od Škrpjela. Today's church dates from 1632 and was renovated and expanded in 1722.
The two islands are part since 1979, as well as the whole bay of Kotor, the world natural and world heritage of UNESCO .
