Madonna and Child (Batz-sur-Mer)
The sculpture Madonna and Child (known as Notre-Dame-du-Précieux-Sang ) in the church of St-Guénolé in Batz-sur-Mer , a French parish in the Loire-Atlantique department of the Pays de la Loire region , was built in the 16th century. Created or 17th century. In 1935 the sculpture was added to the list of listed objects ( Base Palissy ) in France as Monument historique .
The wooden sculpture is 1.05 meters high and originally comes from the Notre-Dame-du-Murier chapel. The baby Jesus sits on the lap of Mary, who is also seated, and turns his face towards the viewer. The many folds of Maria's dress give her appearance a fullness. Mary's right hand is missing.
The sculpture was stolen in February 1978 and found at a Dutch art dealer in 1981. It was bought by the municipality of Batz-sur-Mer and placed in the church.
