The madrasah with the Gothic portal from St. Andrew's Church in Acre

The madrasa of an-Nasir Muhammed is a madrasa in Cairo that was built between 1295 and 1303. The construction was started by the Sultan Chetbuga (ruled 1294 to 1296) and completed by King (al-Malik) an-Nasir Muhammed , who celebrated the inauguration in 1303.

The complex consists of a courtyard with four ivans . These form a cross in the floor plan. It is the earliest facility of this type in Cairo. The inscription at the entrance names an-Nāsir Muhammed ibn Qalāwūn as the builder, but it also dates the year 1296. The inscription was obviously commissioned by Chetbuga and was changed under an-Nāsir Muhammed ibn Qalāwūn, although the year in the text is not was changed. A special feature of the building is the Gothic portal. It is a piece of booty from St. Andrew's Church , which Chalil brought back from Acre during a campaign against the Crusaders and which Chetbuga integrated into the building. The mausoleum is right next to the entrance and has Gothic marble columns that may also come from the church in Acre . There is also a particularly rich mihrab here . A square minaret , richly decorated with stucco , stands above the entrance . The building once had a dome, but it has now disappeared. The sultan was never buried in the mausoleum. In contrast, his son Anuk and his mother Bint Sukbay found their final resting place here .
